Consideration on Financial Freedom #3

 Continuing:

  • Where you plan to live, as this will affect actual expenses.

If living in Hong Kong, retirement costs won't be low, so considering your retirement location is essential.

The only issue is healthcare. Outside Hong Kong, medical expenses become a variable. Hong Kong's public hospitals can handle serious illnesses, but waiting times are long. Medical insurance could be an option.

For a two-person household, in HKD:

  • Hong Kong: 15,000

  • Mainland China tier-1 city: 5,000

  • Mainland China tier-3 city: 1,000

  • Bangkok, Thailand: 3,000

For example, in a mainland tier-3 city, 10,000 HKD total monthly expenses for two people is very sufficient. By this calculation, annual expenses of 120,000, means 1.2 million in present value every 10 years, assuming the lump sum outpaces inflation.

Additionally, you could move between different locations—for instance, living 2 months in Thailand and 3 months in mainland China is also an approach. It depends on your willingness and physical condition.

Most importantly, if you maintain good health, you'll have more options.
